What is Cylindrical Grinding?
Cylindrical grinding is a precision finishing process that uses a rotating abrasive wheel to remove very small amounts of material from the external or internal surface of a cylindrical component. Where CNC turning and milling achieve tolerances of around ±0.01mm to ±0.025mm, cylindrical grinding services go much further — routinely achieving tolerances of ±0.005mm or better, along with surface finishes that conventional cutting tools cannot match.
During cylindrical grinding, the workpiece rotates between centres or in a chuck while a precision-formed grinding wheel — typically aluminium oxide or CBN (cubic boron nitride) — is fed against the surface, removing material in extremely fine increments. The result is a component with exceptional roundness, straightness and surface finish, ideal for applications where precision fit and smooth operation are critical.
At Elmax Engineering Ltd, our cylindrical grinding services are used to finish components that have already been turned or milled, bringing them to their final, tightest-tolerance dimensions. This is particularly important for hardened steel components, where conventional cutting tools struggle to maintain accuracy and grinding becomes the only practical finishing method.
Our cylindrical grinding capability complements our wider CNC machining Manchester service and forms an important part of our overall Manchester precision engineering offering, based at our Stockport facility.
How Our Cylindrical Grinding Services Work
Our cylindrical grinding services follow a careful, methodical process designed to achieve the tightest tolerances and best possible surface finish on every component.
Pre-Machining
The component is first turned via our CNC turning services or milled close to its final dimensions, leaving a small amount of material — typically a fraction of a millimetre — for the grinding operation to remove.
Wheel Selection
The correct grinding wheel is selected based on the material and finish required. CBN wheels are particularly effective on hardened steels, offering long wheel life and consistent results.
Grinding Passes
The component rotates while the grinding wheel is fed across the surface in a series of fine passes, progressively removing material to reach the exact final diameter and surface finish.
Inspection & Despatch
Ground components are inspected using precision measuring equipment — micrometers, bore gauges and surface roughness testers — to confirm they meet your exact tolerance and finish requirements.
Applications of Cylindrical Grinding
Our cylindrical grinding services are used across a wide range of applications wherever exceptional precision and surface finish matter:
Bearing Journals & Fits
Shafts and housings requiring precise diameters for bearing fits, where even a few microns of variation can affect rotation and component life.
Hydraulic Components
Precision shafts and bores for hydraulic cylinders and rams, where a fine surface finish reduces wear and prevents leakage past seals.
Precision Shafts & Spindles
Drive shafts, spindles and pins requiring tight diameter tolerances along their full length for accurate, vibration-free operation.
Hardened Steel Components
Components heat treated for wear resistance, where grinding is the only practical method of achieving final dimensions after hardening.
Gauges & Measuring Equipment
Precision reference components where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical to the function of the gauge itself.
Internal Bores
Internal grinding of bores to achieve tight diameter tolerances and fine finishes that cannot be reached through boring or reaming alone.
Why Choose Elmax Engineering for Cylindrical Grinding?

We serve a wide range of industries across Manchester and the North West. Read more on our engineering blog for further guides on precision manufacturing.
Frequently Asked Questions — Cylindrical Grinding
Our cylindrical grinding services routinely achieve tolerances of ±0.005mm or tighter on diameters and lengths — significantly tighter than the ±0.01mm to ±0.025mm typical of CNC turning and milling alone. The achievable tolerance depends on material, component size and the surface finish required.
CNC turning is excellent for shaping a component close to its final dimensions, but grinding is used where exceptionally tight tolerances or fine surface finishes are required — particularly on bearing fits, hydraulic components and hardened steel parts. Grinding removes the small amount of material left after turning to reach the final precision dimensions.
Yes. Our cylindrical grinding services are well suited to hardened steel components using CBN (cubic boron nitride) grinding wheels, which maintain sharpness and accuracy on hardened materials where conventional cutting tools would wear quickly or fail to hold tolerance.
Yes, we provide both external cylindrical grinding for shafts, spindles and pins, and internal grinding for precision bores. Both processes are available alongside our CNC machining Manchester services for a complete component solution.
